New Delhi: BJP on Wednesday lashed out at the Government after Italian businessman Ottavio Quattrocchi walked free from Argentina on Wednesday.
Calling it a "serious lapse" on the part of the Government, BJP said that it would raise the matter "forcefully" in Parliament.
Quattrocchi was allowed to return home to Italy from Argentina on Wednesday after the CBI failed to challenge an Argentine court's rejection of its plea to extradite him to India.
The BJP says the UPA muffled evidence that could have facilitated Quattorchi's extradition.
“All this was a collusive exercise to allow Quattrochi to escape and I think the CBI must be complementing itself along with the Government of India but they need to be scandalised in the whole country for having done this,” BJP General Secretary Arun Jaitley said.
Meanwhile, party Vice-President Mukhtar Abbas Naqvi on Wednesday told PTI, “It was a result of the casual approach of the Congress-led government. The development is not only unfortunate but is also a serious lapse."
"BJP would raise the matter in Parliament and the government is answerable to the people of this country on the matter. After all, Quattrochi was not an ordinary criminal," he added.
CBI Sources have told CNN-IBN that the investigative agency was kept in dark by the Indian Embassy in Argentina about Quattrochi's impending release for about five days.
His passport was released by the Argentine authorities after India withdrew its appeal for his extradition in the Argentine Supreme Court last Thursday.
