BJP seals deal with Shiv Sena in Maharashtra

CNN-IBN

New Delhi: Reeling from the loss of an old alliance partner, the BJD, BJP got a boost of sorts after retaining its oldest ally - the Shiv Sena in Maharashtra.

The two parties are expected to formally announce their tie-up soon.

The Shiv Sena-BJP alliance had been rocky amid reports that the Sena may strike a deal with the NCP. Despite three unsettled constituencies, both the parties have now successfully worked out the rest of the seat-sharing arrangements.

According to sources, BJP will contest 26 of the 48 Lok Sabha seats in Maharashtra.

A compromise has been made on the coveted seat in Kalyan which will be contested by Shiv Sena. In return Shiv Sena has accepted LK Advani as their prime ministerial candidate.

The two partners have also been able to overcome their differences over the freshly-created Yavatmal-Washim constituency. The new constituency has been formed after merging Yavatmal and Washim.

Dispute arose because while Yavatmal was won by the BJP in 2004, Sena had bagged Washim.
