New Delhi: Congress MP Sanjay Nirupam on Friday tweeted that his remarks against BJP leader Smriti Irani were being distorted and taken out of context. Nirupam, during a live TV debate, had lashed out at Irani, questioning her political sense, saying, "Char din hue hain aur aap rajnitik vishleshak bani firti hain (It's been only four days that you have entered politics and you have already turned into a political analyst). Aap toh TV pe thumke lagati thi, aaj chunavi vishleshak ban gayi (Till about some time ago, you used to dance on TV and now you have become an analyst)!"
The disparaging remarks were slammed by the party. The BJP sought an apology from Congress President Sonia Gandhi, while Irani sent a defamation notice to Nirupam.
BJP spokesperson Ravi Shankar Prasad said, "Sanjay Nirupam in a panel discussion with Irani crossed all limits of decency. The BJP deplores this act by the Congress MP. We expect Sonia Gandhi to apologise and take action against Nirupam for his comment on Smriti Irani. If Sonia fails to respond, BJP will protest against her. BJP will boycott Sanjay Nirupam. No BJP spokesperson will be in the same panel on any News channel, if Sanjay Nirupam is there."
Nirupam, however, tweeted saying, "Smriti Irani things taken out of context people have to see the full debate and understand the context."
