BJP seeks stay on next Army Chief's appointment, writes to President

New Delhi: Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leader Subramanian Swamy has written to President Pranab Mukherjee seeking a stay on the appointment of the next Army chief. The Defence Ministry has recommended Vice Chief of Army Staff, Lt General Dalbir Suhag as the next Army Chief after General Bikram Singh retires.

The BJP is protesting that an outgoing government should not appoint the next Army Chief and should leave the decision to the next government.

Earlier this week, former Army Chief VK Singh, who contested the lok Sabha elections from Ghaziabad on a BJP ticket, had accused the UPA government of violating democratic norms by pushing the appointment of Lt General Dalbir Suhag as the next Army Chief.

The former Army chief had asked for another enquiry into an alleged fake encounter which had taken place in Manipur where Lt Gen Suhag's men had come under scanner.

As per tradition, the government announces the name of services chiefs-designate two months before the retirement of the incumbent.

Sticking to that, it is expected to announce the name of the new Army chief by May 1, three months prior to the date of retirement of Gen Bikram Singh.
