Mumbai: Farmer suicides in Vidarbha are once again being politicised in Maharashtra.

Maharashtra state BJP president Nitin Gadkari claimed on Monday that the aid package announced by Prime Minister Manmohan Singh during his visit has provided no relief to farmers and suicides have, infact, doubled after his visit.

“Nearly 1,200 farmers have committed suicide. There've been false post-mortem reports. And where the post-mortem wasn't done, the cause of death was attributed to mental instability or excessive consumption of alcohol in the affidavit. Even in the Hiraman Patil case the Mumbai High Court has rapped the Government on this issue,” says Gadkari.

Gadkari says the issue will be taken to Rashtrapati Bhavan and President Kalam will be asked to intervene

“We have decided that since the PM is not resolving the issue and the state government is also not paying any attention, BJP MPs, MLAs and various people's representatives, Gopinath Munde, opposition leader Bhausaheb Phulkar and myself will meet the President on this matter,” he said.

A farmer committed suicide on Monday in front of Assembly house in Nagpur triggering off yet another debate over farmers suicides.

However, it was later disclosed by police that this man committed suicide because of domestic issues.
