New Delhi: After a row over Human Resource Development Minister Smriti Irani's education qualification, Rural Development Minister Gopinath Munde's qualification is now under the scanner. The Congress questioned Munde on the same count, alleging that he "graduated in 1976 from a college established in 1978".
Munde defended his qualification saying that the degree was issued by the Pune University and not by the college, "I have done a BCom and a BGL. I did an LLB for two years from the ILS College. However, it isnt the college that issues the degree certificate, it's Pune University."
According to the affidavit submitted by Munde for the Lok Sabha elections, now available on the Election Commission website, he claimed that he did his Bachelors degree from New Law College, Pune in 1976. But the college was established in 1978.
Congress leader Shakeel Ahmed raised the matter on Twitter. He tweeted, "Social media is discussing the big achievement of BJP leader & RD Minister Mr Munde? He graduated in 1976 from a college established in 1978."
Earlier, Smriti Irani's qualification sparked a controversy as while filing her affidavit in 2004 and 2014, Irani had made two different claims about her qualification. In 2004 while taking on Congress leader Kapil Sibal from Chandni Chowk, New Delhi, she claimed to have completed her BA in 1996 from Delhi University's School of correspondence.
Five Delhi University staff were suspended on Friday for allegedly leaking purported documents relating to undergraduate admission of Irani and her admit card. Irani intervened and asked the University to "reinstate" them.
