Blame human for 'unfriendly' world

New Delhi: The future is unpleasantly hot – that's the message from the Inter-Governmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC).

IPCC is a scientific body set up by the UN with representatives from 130 countries and with an Indian R K Pachuari in charge.

In a report published on Friday, the panel made it clear that scientific evidence pinned the blame for climate change on human beings.

And the argument is over for those who thought climate change was an overblown conspiracy theory or that human beings aren't responsible for a warmer world. With the IPCC report refusing to indulge in sensationalism or politics the message couldn't have been starker.

“If you are a south Asian child born in 2007, it is within your lifetime that you may be faced with inundation of your lands and therefore turned into an environmental refugee,” said UNEP Exective Director Achim Steiner.

The report says sea levels and temperatures will continue to rise for centuries because the process has already begun and there is little we can do to stop it.

It will mean a changed world, where whole countries could disappear under water.

But the bad news just keeps getting worse humans are to blame for

  • warmer days and nights, frequent heat waves and shorter winters
  • increased rainfall in some areas and more droughts
  • increasingly violent hurricanes and typhoons like Katrina

And with all these trends only looking to continue the impact on both lives and the economy is only going to become more evident.

“I don't think India now can say that we will not do anything and let the others start first,” said Indian Express Environment Editor Sonu Jain.

Think about it this way – if you are in school, when you grow up, the days will be hotter, the nights as well; the summers will be longer and winters shorter. Moreover, using air conditioning might not be an option. The world in fact might not be a very friendly place to live in.
