Blast in Indonesia market, 7 killed

AFP

Palu, (Indonesia): A bomb ripped through a crowded meat market in an Indonesian province that has been plagued by sectarian violence, killing at least seven people on Saturday and wounding 48.

"As of 0245 hrs, (IST) we have a total of seven victims, whose bodies are being kept at four hospital morgues in the city," police told AFP, adding that the number of injured had risen to 48.

National police spokesman Paulus Purwoko also said the death toll had risen to seven. He told reporters three victims died at the bomb site and four died later in hospital.

Television footage showed helmeted police along with survivors carrying the victims to cars. The injured, many of whom suffered shrapnel wounds, have been ferried to the same four hospitals.

The latest blast to rock the restive area came as Indonesian security forces across the archipelago nation were on high alert for potential Islamic extremist attacks during the New Year period.
