New Delhi: Unknown attackers fired a rocket at the US embassy in Athens on Friday but no one was hurt, Greek and US officials said.
Greek counter-terrorism experts carrying search operations nearby buildings for possibility of the rocket launch from the vicinity.
Greek police sealed off one of Athens' main avenues on Friday after a loud explosion inside the American embassy building.
Four fire engines have been rushed to the scene, amid reports that the explosion struck the embassy's first floor.
Meanwhile, anonymous callers have claimed the Greek Leftist group Revolutionary Struggle was behind a rocket attack on the embassy, Greece's Public Order Minister said.
"There are one or two anonymous phone calls which claim that the Revolutionary Struggle was behind the attack," the minister, Byron Polydoras, told reporters outside the embassy.
The American embassy is among the best-guarded buildings in the Greek Capital.
The tightly guarded building is surrounded by a 3-metre (9-feet)-high steel fence. Guards are posted at every entrance and at street corners around it.
Embassy officials could not immediately be reached for comment. Local residents called in to state television saying they had felt the explosion, which shattered some windows.
Greece is a democratic country and also an ally of the US thus the attack could have been either internal conflict or external aggression.
