New Delhi: High-speed winds have brought life to a standstill in the Kashmir Valley.
There was panic in Srinagar on Friday after strong winds uprooted several trees and electric poles and damaged houses.
Reports suggest that many huts made of mud and thatch have collapsed.
There are also unconfirmed reports that some locals are missing after their houseboats capsized on the Dal lake.
Police say they've rescued 200 tourists who were in houseboats. Rescue workers are still searching for more people.
"We have rescued nearly 200 people, mostly tourists, from drowning after a number of boats on sight-seeing trips capsized in Dal Lake in the wake of high velocity wind," said Station House Officer of Nehru Park police station Abdul Aziz Khan.
Electricity and water supply have been disrupted, and phone lines have been affected.
Power development department snapped power supply as the wind uprooted trees and electric poles at a number of places in the city, blocking main roads.
The entire transportation network in the area has come to a grinding halt due to the blizzard. The roads from Srinagar to Anantnag and Baramulla have also been closed.
Locals say such high-speed winds are very unusual at this time of year.
