Blizzard in J&K, 5 locals missing

CNN-IBN

New Delhi: A major blizzard struck Srinagar and other parts of Jammu and Kashmir on Friday evening, creating panic in the tourist hub.

While most people have been rescued from the tourist resorts scattered across the region, five people have been missing in Dal Lake after three Shikars capsized during the storm.

District administration sources said over 200 tourists were rescued from the Dal Lake as soon as the blizzard struck and rescue workers were still hunting for more people, who may have gone unnoticed.

"We have rescued nearly 200 people, mostly tourists, from drowning after a number of boats on sight-seeing trips capsized in Dal Lake in the wake of high velocity wind," Station House Officer of Nehru Park police station Abdul Aziz Khan told PTI.

The entire transportation network in the area has come to a grinding halt due to the blizzard. The storm wreaked havoc in the state capital, uprooting hundreds of trees and electric poles and disrupting power supply in several parts.

A weather office spokesman said wind with a speed of 24 to 30 kilometres per hour is now sweeping the city.

Power development department snapped power supply as the wind uprooted trees and electric poles at a number of places in the city, blocking main roads.
