Mumbai: The communication system in India’s commercial capital failed as mobile phones were jammed and landlines stopped working after the 7/11 serial blasts.
However, a community of bloggers took charge of the situation and came to help.
Mumbaihelp.blogspot.com had first taken initiative during the July 26 deluge last year and this year too it become a liaison between worried relatives who couldn’t get through to their loved ones.
If there was a person sitting in New Jersey and he wanted to get in touch with someone in Mumbai, there were a number of people getting in touch with him in real time," says mumbaihelp.blogspot.com blogger, Amit Varma.
The blog provided accurate and updated information to including the names of the injured, the list of hospitals and the traffic updates on a day dogged by rumours.
"There was a fear that people needed blood at Sion Hospital, we got messages that there was enough blood people were doing it voluntarily," says Varma.
It was not just the facts and figures that Mumbaihelp offered, it also provided a space for Mumbaikars to express themselves not to mention the much-needed assurance.
