Bangalore: Nearly 450 traffic policemen, air force personnel and Army police lined up on Bangalore's Brigade Road, to give Sunday shoppers a message - wear your helmets!

The rally was a part of the awareness campaign launched by the Bangalore police to spread the word on the new law.

In another two weeks all bikers in Bangalore will have to wear helmets as a rule for the Karnataka government has made this mandatory for bikers and pillion-riders from August 1, 2006.

Says Bangalore Police Commissioner, N Achuta Rao, "If anyone violates the order, they will be fined Rs 100 the first time, Rs 300 the second tine and if the offence is repeated a third time, people's licence may be suspended."

Pitching in with its own campaign was the Brigade Shops and Establishments association. The association started off a billboard campaign with catchy one-liners lining the footpath in support of the new law.

Secretary, Brigade Shops and Establishments association, Suhail Yusuff says, "We have installed nearly 50 billboards to bring about traffic awareness in response to the Prime Minister's comments and Chief Minister Kumaraswamy's ten-point programme."

"The police and private organisations have conducted a lot of studies and the statistics have revealed that in case of an accident, people who were not wearing a helmet usually succumbed to head injuries. Wearing a helmet can lessen the fatality of these injuries," says N Achuta Rao.

The people of Bangalore made their opinion known too by adding on to the movement with a signature campaign.

In a city which adds alost 800 vehicles to its road everyday, one cannot control the traffic, but it's better to take precautions to protect oneself.
