Bangalore: Yahya Iyash Kammakutty, a software engineer suspected of having links with terrorist groups, has been sent to Corps of Detectives (CoD) custody till March 6 by a Hubli magistrate.
The CoD of Bangalore Police produced the 32-year-old Yahya in the Hubli District Court magistrate’s house at 0400 hrs IST on Saturday morning after his arrest late on Thursday night. He's the fifth IT professional to be arrested in the last one month for suspected terror links.
Police also claim he has links with four people arrested earlier in Hubli. They allegedly had links with the attack on the Indian Institute of Science, Bangalore in December 2005 and the Hyderabad bomb blasts last year.
There are now fears of Bangalore emerging as a possible white-collar terrorist hub after the arrest of five IT professional with terror links.
Yahya is a B. Tech from Regional Engineering College, Kozhikode and is a former employee of Tata Infotech and GE. He was sacked from GE last year for stealing data.
Police also claim to have recovered laptops and books with allegedly incriminating information from him following his arrest.
Police suspect that Yahya, a native of Kerala, heads the banned Students Islamic Movement of India (SIMI) in Karnataka.
On Friday, Karnataka police raided the house of another terror suspect in Bangalore, whose name was disclosed by Yahya during an interrogation. The police, however, could not trace him.
Police said the raid was conducted on the house of Samir, a contractor and aluminum trader, in Guruappanapalya on Bannerghatta Road in the city from where Yahya was nabbed.
A team of CoD will also be visiting Yahya's native place in Kerala's Kozhikode district for investigations.
Police are also trying to find out if he had any links with the suspected militants recently arrested in Uttar Pradesh.
