B'lore gears up for tough monsoons

Bangalore: Mythili Narasimhan likes to keep her house well, yet, every year before the monsoon, her family has to hoist their furniture onto wooden blocks to keep them safe from water which is bound to enter the house.

It's the same story in many residential areas in Bangalore. Come rains and the issue of drains and sewage flare up.

The monsoon is just round the corner and Bangaloreans are gearing up for a tough time. The city's drainage system is in tatters, and residents fear many areas may get flooded.

"Dirty water, drainage water, gutter water - everything come inside. Lots of snakes, lots of poisonous creatures also come inside the house," says Mythili.

Two years ago, the Bangalore Mahanagara Palike had sanctioned Rs 760 crore to de-silt and remodel the city's drains. But only 25 per cent of the work has been completed. When CNN-IBN approached them, civic officials refused to comment on the issue.

Heavy pre-monsoon showers have already claimed eight lives and property in the state and many fear the worst is yet to come.

Says senior meteorologist, B Puttanna, "The number of rainy days is seven for this month, so we are expecting a good amount of rainfall activity in May."

The pre-monsoon showers might give Bangloreans a respite from the heat, yet the problems they leave in their wake is harder to face than the soaring temperatures.
