Bangalore: Sayeed Pir was admitted to a hospital in Bangalore two days back. Like around 25 other people, the 74-year-old complained of nausea, vomiting and diarrhea.
The diagnosis for everyone was the same - gastroenteritis. Twenty-five to twenty-eight people are being admitted to the Epidemic Diseases Hospital in Bangalore with gastroenteritis every day.
Doctors say the number of cases went up to 418 in May - a rise of over 50 per cent since the previous month.
Says Dr MM Gangadharayah of the Epidemics and Contagious Diseases hospital, "Dry weather, some rain, environmental conditions and people eating outside - everything leads to gastroenteritis."
Most of the cases are being reported from slums in areas like Chamrajpet and Tannery Road.
Sporadic rainfall over the last few weeks has led to collection of water in many places, and unhygienic surroundings are making things worse. However, the state government says there's no cause for concern.
Says State Health Minister, R Ashok, "In May and June gastroenteritis and cholera are regular features. The situation is under control. We have asked officials to monitor it."
It's a city that can be hot, cold and rainy on the same day. This unpredictable weather is not taking a toll on the health of the people living here.
