Bangalore: In what came as the chilling reminder of how real estate has become a risky business in Bangalore, a realtor was shot dead late on Monday night, allegedly after a land deal fell through.
Narayana had recently struck a deal to buy a three-and-half acre plot on the outskirts of Bangalore. When the deal fell through, he demanded the advance payment back.
However, he was brutally shot dead for making the demand. The incident has left his family terribly shocked and confused. "His business was okay. He was on the phone all the time and never talked about business to people at home," says Narayanan's wife, Lavanya.
As real estate continues to boom in Bangalore, it looks like land has become dearer than human lives. And now, the epithet of serene and peaceful Bangalore seems to rest uneasy on the city.
Just two months ago, two employees of a real estate office were shot dead. And in the last five months, there has been an alarming increase in property-related killings.
The authorities noticed the incidents a few weeks ago. "In many of the cases, it was due to some property dispute, like between father and son. Sometimes, land dealings had gone wrong and people felt cheated," says Joint Commissioner (Crime) Gopal Hosur.
Though several rowdies have been hauled up and some forbidden to enter the city, it has not quite made a difference to the sad state affairs.
