B'lore's innovative ways to dispose waste

Bangalore: The onset of winter in the North has helped tackle Dengue but in Bangalore the weather continues to remain warm and garbage piling around the city has made matters worse.

The city generates more than 2,000 tons of garbage every day, which is discarded haphazardly in dumping grounds across the city.

But help is on its way with a scientific method to ensure an environment friendly way of disposing waste.

"Palingenesis means rebirth. Waste material is processed chemically by adding liquid additives, this process works through chemical and electro chemical reactions. There is no combustion," Chief Executive, Nishitha Consultants, C P Reddy said.

What's more Palingenesis not only does away with landfills but also generates wealth for waste.

"For setting up a 600 ton plant, it costs about Rs 50 crore but the income in the first year itself will be Rs 70-80 crore. We get revenue out of processing the waste. We get three-end products – low-cost building material, compost or organic fertiliser and fuel pellets," Reddy explained.

At present, Philippines is the only country where Palingenesis has been used successfully. Process plants are also being set up in five other countries.

With Bangalore dumping its waste into open dumping grounds, scientific methods of disposing solid waste is the need of the hour like never before.
