B'lore's tryst with the 'common man'

Bangalore: Students of a Bangalore school have got a special Diwali gift - a meeting with cartoonist R K Laxman, who gave them tips on drawing cartoons.

It was an impromptu song-and-dance event the students put together for their special guest - R K Laxman.

The well known Pune-based cartoonist, who was in Bangalore for a short visit, decided to drop by at a school in his neighbourhood for a tete-a-tete - and a short lesson in art.

Students say that the renowned cartoonist is 'too funny in his look', that he can 'make a cartoon look real'.

For Laxman doodling continues to be as effortless as always and his cartoons are as satirical as ever.

"Deve gowda was my favourite. His appearance, his sleeping habit - Deve Gowda used to sleep all the time when I was talking to him," says Laxman.

Surrounded by his own creations in the school, the memories of what Bangalore once was and what it is now, brings alive his sense of humour.

"'Bengaluru' - people will still call it Bangalore, whatever the government decides. Bangalore and Mysore have lost their character and beauty. People discuss the traffc but there are other things - heaps of garbage, meaningless buildings and cinema and toothpaste posters that cover the city," says he.

You said it, Mr Laxman. And yes, there are several inspired by you.

It's been long-established that if you learn with pictures, you learn better and if you learn with cartoons, you probably learn with a lot more fun. Never let your schooling interfere with your education.
