New Delhi: Delhiites had a tough time on Saturday as all Blue Line buses were taken off roads for the weekend.
Commuters clearly felt the heat as it meant long hours of waiting at the bus stop and DTC buses were jam-packed.
The Blue Lines were ordered not to ply during the weekend by the state government after a spate of accidents in the past.
And the time will be utilised to check the breaking systems, authorisation papers and speed governors on 4000 private Blue Line buses.
The Delhi transport Corporation has deployed around 200 of its staff at 34 depots to facilitate this.
Says motor licensing officer, south zone, A R Joshi, “We are taking all steps to make sure that Blue Line buses become safe.
From Monday, only those buses with proper fitness certificates will be allowed to operate. But Blue Line bus owners didn’t seem too happy with the new system.
“They are not conducting proper tests. There are several DTC which don't have proper speed governors but nobody is checking them,” said a Blue Line Bus service provider.
In fact on Saturday only 393 Blue line buses showed up at depots across the capital. Of them only 149 got a clean chit.
So as most Blue Line buses decided to give the check posts a missing on Saturday, Delhi government's plan of finishing the fitness test of close to 4, 000 Blue Line buses in a span of two days seems to have gone for a toss.
The state transport department will now have to either extend the deadline for conducting these tests or come up with an alternate plan.
