Blu-rays discs to hit Indian shelves soon

Mumbai: The much talked about Blu-ray Disc is soon hitting Indian shelves.

Akshay Kumar-starrer comedy Hey Babyy will the first Indian film to be available on this format.

The film's director Sajid Khan is already a Blu-ray fan and swears by the new format’s audio video quality.

Technically the Blu-ray disc's storage capacity, laser wavelength and data transfer rate makes the quality of Blu-ray disc five times better than that of a DVD print.

Whats more the Blu-ray comes with a scratch protection layer and so you can be assured of uninterrupted viewing.

But the big question is ----is it time to replace your DVD player with a Blu-ray player already?

“Blu-ray is still just 12 months old. We have introduced about 100 English films in India on Blu-ray. But the market yet has to catch on as people who want better quality will go for Blu-ray just like they moved from VHS to DVD. For those interested in home entertainment Blu-ray is the best in the market as of now,” says Country Manager, Sony Pictures, N Muthuram.

Higher quality comes at a higher price, so while you could get a good

player for over Rs 2,000, a Blu-ray player could cost you more than Rs 27,000.

And as for the discs---just when you could get original DVDs for anything like Rs 45 upward and a Blu-ray disc can cost you around Rs 2,500 rupees.

So should you upgrade your DVD player with a Blu-ray player?

It could be a matter of choice and preference, just the way one day you upgraded your VCR to a VCD and then to DVD for better quality.

Clearly there is no end to better quality ----you pay more you get more.
