Mumbai: After a young girl was bitten by a stray dog, the Bombay Municipal Corporation (BMC) has decided to impose a fine on people who feed stray dogs.
“People feed the stray dogs without realising that after they leave, the dogs pose a threat to the children. So we've decided to impose a fine of Rs 600,” Mumbai Mayor Shubha Raut said.
The city's animal lovers, however, have taken an objection to the decision. They claim stopping people from feeding strays is no solution to the menace.
“If they feel stopping a handful of people from feeding will solve the problem then they’re wrong. They are digressing from the issue of sterilization of the dogs,” veterinary doctor Deepa Katyal says.
But many citizens have endorsed BMC’s move. Sarita Matreja, a mother of two, says she feels worried sending her children out to play.
“There are so many stray dogs out there. My son was bitten once and now I never send them out alone. I have to go accompany them,” Sarita says.
Even though BMC has imposed a fine, the truth is open garbage cans are an easy source of food for the stray dogs. Perhaps, BMC needs to think of a comprehensive solution than just tackling a part of the problem.
