Mumbai: The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) wants to appeal to the Supreme Court to legalise the killing of stray dogs.
Says Commissioner, BMC, Jairaj Pathak, “If we want to be Singapore, we should kill strays. That's what they do."
Kill all stray dogs- that seems to be part of the BMC's plan to make Mumbai another Singapore.
And if the corporation has its way then stray dogs may join the list of extinct species, at least in Mumbai.
To achieve this objective, the commissioner has instructed all his officers to collect extensive data on the lakhs of stray dogs in Mumbai that will support the corporation's appeal in the apex court.
“We should kill stray dogs as a long-term solution, we will put forth the appeal to the High Court and then if required to the Supreme Court,” says Pathak.
As expected the plan has not gone down well with the city's animal rights activists who are up in arms against the BMC commissioner's plans.
“Killing the dogs is not a solution at all. The only preventive solution is only sterilisation as also suggested by the WHO and also immunisation to prevent rabies,” says veterinary surgeon and animal activist, Dr Deepa Katyal.
With animal rights activists gathering ammunition, this fight is sure to be a long one and though the winner is unknown, the stray dogs are certainly on slippery ground.
