Mumbai: The good news first – the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has said their pre-monsoon drive to fix the roads has started earlier than usual.
Out of 537 km of roads that were excavated by various utilities, 409 km of roads have been reinstated. And out of 871 bad stretches of road identified by the BMC, 400 of them have been repaired.
Besides, the BMC says it has completed almost 60 per cent of de-silting of the drains.
A quick drive around suburban areas and we found newly done up roads in most places with new pavements too. It’s a pleasant sight indeed but commuters are still circumspect.
“These rickety pavements are just not going to last,” a commuter said.
So, that brings us to the bad news. The Western Express Highway is a classic case, one of the main arteries of the city, the road is still in a deplorable state with uneven roads, thanks to errant contractors and various flyover works that have completely missed their deadlines.
Now, the meteorological department says this year's rains are expected a week early. On the whole, the roads are looking better than they ever have but some big questions still remain over the drainage system. Will it work, or will it let us down again? We will find out soon enough.
