BMC's bumpy task of filling potholes

Mumbai: The Bombay High Court has given the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) time till August 30 to fill up the potholes in the city. But with just nine days to go, the BMC's quick-fix exercise hardly makes for a smooth ride.

Says a commuter, Dr Sanjiv Parekh, "The roads are so bad that if I have an emergency to attend, I can't make it in time because it takes me 15 minutes to travel the five minute distance to my clinic."

And he's not the only one with that woe. Almost every Mumbaikar who takes the road to commute daily is living through this bumpy nightmare and the patchwork done by the BMC is evidence of that harrowing story.

Says another commuter, Dr R S Dubey, "The roads are very bad. One day they fill the potholes and the next day it's back to bumpy rides."

The potholes in Mumbai are like a disease and with thousands such pockmarks lining every road of Mumbai, the BMC and Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority have a bumpy ride ahead if they plan to hit the track running.

However, even if the civic authorities do manage to accomplish the mammoth task, the commuters will still take the deadline with a pinch of salt because for them these roads are not for keeps - they are just lip service.

A commuter Sayeed Momeen says, "The BMC does such a hasty work that even if they fill up the potholes, they use inferior quality raw material that just gets washed away with the rains."

The BMC's humongous task needs to be accomplished in less than 10 days now but with the staff of BMC nowhere in sight, even after five days of the High Court's order, it seems like mission impossible.
