BMW Case: Quantum of sentence today

New Delhi: The Patiala House Court is likely to deliver the quantum of the sentence in the BMW hit-and-run case on Wednesday. The court had held the main accused Sanjeev Nanda guilty on Tuesday.

Nanda was convicted under Section 304 (2) of the IPC, culpable homicide not amounting to murder - a conviction which spells a maximum penalty of 10 years in jail.

Twenty-nine-year-old Nanda, who is the grandson of a former Navy chief, has already spent nine months in detention. He was taken into police custody immediately after the verdict was announced.

His defence counsel will try to press for a lighter penalty.

Meanwhile, Nanda's former defence counsel in the case, RK Anand has now approached the Supreme Court challenging the Delhi High Court order, which has barred him from practising for four months.

Last month, senior advocates R K Anand and I U Khan were convicted for obstructing administration of justice and debarred for appearing in courts for four months for their role in trying to manipulate a witness in the BMW case.

The senior advocates were convicted after a sting operation was telecast last year, showing them trying to bribe the key witness.
