Mumbai: Every celebrity worth his flashbulb wants fan adulation, but it seems conditions apply. More and more celebrities are paying big money to hire increasingly violent private security to keep away prying eyes and unwanted attention.
”People get scared when they're threatened. They don't trust the police anymore,” says security officer Sudhir Baar.
Whether scuffling with the media at the wedding of Aamir Khan in Panchgani or battling crowds at the Ash-Abhishek jamboree, violent private security is today for hire, anytime, for anybody.
Sometimes, even the biggest celebrity has to apologise for the behaviour of his security. “If we have caused inconvinience to anybody, we are sorry,” Amitabh Bachchan said after the Ash-Abhishek wedding.
Not everyone is sorry. Ronit Roy is biggest star of India’s soap opera TV. He is also runs a security agency. His men guarded the Aamir wedding and he says they did nothing wrong.
”We are not in the business of selling niceness. We will react like this,” he says.
Once only seen at hotels and bars, security agencies have mushroomed across India in recent years And agencies charge between Rs 1 lakh to Rs. 10 lakh a month for 24-hour security depending on threat perception.
”We do whatever we can to fight and put up a restrain at the physical level. Be it karate or boxing. We have been doing this with legal sanctity and have been successful so far,” says a security officer Pankaj Thakur
The Mahatma would not approve but these men believe that sometimes to fight violence, you must use violence.
