New Delhi: The monkey menace in Delhi is assuming disastrous proportions. But what is the solution?

As Delhi’s Deputy Mayor succumbed to injuries sustained after monkeys attacked him on Sunday, the question that everyone was asking – what is the solution to this threat?

It is then that people like Nandlal come into the scene. Nandlal’s job is to catch the troublemakers day in, day out. And each catch fetches him Rs 450. One wonders whether the job is rewarding enough, but it sure is challenging.

“ I get scratches. But this my job,” says Nandlal.

Nandlal belongs to an exclusive club. He is one of the only three monkey catchers in Delhi. And they are the first and the last line of defence in the Municipal Corporation of Delhi's efforts to check the monkey menace.

In fact, the MCD is trying to get more monkey catchers, but is not getting any response to its tenders.

“There are four reasons because people are not coming forward - Religious sentiments, traditional job, people opting for other jobs and danger of the job,” says MCD Spokesperson, Deep Matheu.

The Delhi High Court had asked the civic body to catch monkeys from residential areas and send them to the Asola Bhatti sanctuary. But the MCD's lack of resources means more happy days for Delhi's monkeys.
