Bollywood, a fascination for Pakistanis

CNN-IBN

Islamabad: The successful screening of "Singh is King" and "Kismet Konnection" in Pakistan, has led distributors to ask more of Bollywood films to be shown in the country.

Governments may have come and gone, but one thing that has remained constant in the land of Pakistan has been its people's fascination with Indian cinema. The fascination is just like the Indian sweet Jalebi that are are desi, sumptious to consume and once in the habit, hard to let go of.

Indian films have become such stable diet for Pakistani households that despite the ban that was imposed on Indian films in 1965, they continued to be watched by Pakistanis during the subsequent years.

Video parlors and shops stocked pirated DVDs and CDs, catering to the massive appetite of Pakistanis for Bollywood films. Such was the demand that they could watch the latest film less than a week after its release in India.

But after the government lifted its official ban on Indian films, Bollywood has finally arrived on the big screen. Pakistani audiences give off shades of positivism in their reaction and for Pakistani distributors; the films have been most definitely a financial boon.

After a hard day's work in Pakistan, films provide welcome relief in their escapism. Viewed in an unlit magical cinema hall, they allow the audience the audacity to hope and dream. And given that films play this noble role, the only thing left to say to the influx of foreign films in Pakistani cinema is "the more the merrier."
