New Delhi: Evidence is piling up against self-styled godman Ashok Jadeja, accused of swindling a number of people across six states.
While Jadeja is now in jail, the damage he's allegedly done to hundreds of families can never be reversed.
Desperation, disappointment and anger is palpable in an East Delhi locality where hundreds of families have been duped of huge sums, allegedly by Jadeja.
Just a few months ago, these families were followers of Jadeja and his alleged indoctrination. They believed him when he spoke because he was one of their own, a 'Sansi' by caste, just like them.
"We loved him and gave him more respect than we would give God," says one of the victims Satish Kumar.
Satish Kumar sold two of plots, all the jewellery in the house and collected Rs 48 lakh simply because Jadeja claimed to triple any amount of money given to him.
Claiming to be blessed with divine powers, he reportedly delivered on his promises to gain trust. It was only when people started gambling for more that he started vanishing with their cash.
"I have to marry my daughters, I am a widow. What will I do, where will I go?” says another victim
Bharti Devi.
Families across Delhi claim to have lost money to the tune of many crore. The police have received almost 250 complaints against Jadeja.
"I will kill him and all his family without worrying about my life,” an angry Satish Kumar says.
Jadeja is now in Gujarat police remand and the police hope to nab all involved in the nexus.
Meanwhile, Gujarat police claim to have a found a diary with details of all his illegal transactions conducted over three months.
The diary belongs to Jadeja's close aide, Raman Bhutta and contains records which indicate that Jadeja might have earned as much as Rs 90 crore in three months.
According to the police, as many as 17 agents like Bhutta work with Jadeja, managing funds to the tune of Rs 400 crore.
Bhutta's diary contained the names and mobile numbers of those who were swindled by Jadeja, parting with lakhs in cash.
According to records, Bollywood actor Kiran Kumar – now a filmmaker in Gujarat – had allegedly taken money from Jadeja to make films.
But Kiran Kumar claims he's being framed and has denied knowing Ashok Jadeja
"He gave a statement that he had given Kiran Kumar Rs 5 crore. When I don’t even know this man how can I take his money? Why has he given me Rs 5 crore? I shall speak the truth and I trust the CBI, CID and police to figure out who is lying and who is telling the truth,” he said.
Meanwhile, reports also suggest that the Jadeja was not only into swindling money.
Video footage from a CD that has been handed over to Gujarat police shows him dancing with bar girls, showering crisp currency notes on them.
The self-styled godman was arrested earlier this week on charges of financial fraud.
He and several members from his family are accused of cheating his followers of gold and cash worth crores of rupees.
