Mumbai: Bollywood actors including Soha Ali Khan, Priyanka Chopra and Tushar Kapoor are acting out a journalists’ life on the big screen.
There seems to be a high tide of realism in Bollywood with filmmakers choosing real issues to make films.
They are not only creating characters that are inspired by real life people, increasingly journalists seem to have caught the fancy of the moviemakers.
Bollywood actress Soha Ali Khan always wanted to be a journalist and her latest release Mumbai Meri Jaan made that dream come true, at least for a few reels.
Soha plays a television news reporter who covers the Mumbai train blasts only to realise that her own fiancé is one of the victims, an incident that is sensationalised by the channel in the race for TRPs.
"I believe we become insensitive. I have seen some reporting on TV with background scores, fonts that are dripping blood from them, especially after Bombay blasts in July 2006. That is irresponsible, that creates more fear,” Soha asserts.
However it's not just serious statements on the culture of newsgathering that's doing rounds, Tushar Kapoor plays a reporter in his forthcoming comedy CKKompany. One may not believe that he actually hosts a crime show in the film.
"My role is of a crime reporter called Akshay Kumar who hosts a late night show called Khalbali for Zee News and he informs people about various criminals through the show,” says Tushar.
However, even actress Priyanka Chopra runs a sting operation for her channel in God Tussi Great Ho.
"I play a journalist, who is very passionate about her channel and is very committed to her work,” says Priyanka.
Meanwhile, even Ram Gopal Varma seems to be ready to dissect the media through an expose of sorts in his next film.
It seems after Zayed Khan's role as a hardcore international affairs journalist in Mission Istanbul, stories and films around the media have become a fashion.
