Veteran actor Joy Mukherjee, known for his romantic roles, passed away on March 9.

Joy Mukherjee is one of the best known romnatic film heroes.

Joy Mukherjee was the son of Sashadhar Mukherjee and Sati Devi. His father was a successful producer and a co-founder of Filmalaya Studios.

In the Mukherjee family tree - Joy Mukherjee is Kajol and Tanisha's uncle.

Joy Mukherjee made his debut with Love in Simla (1960).

Sadhna was his leading lady in 'Love In Shimla'.

'Love In Shimla' was directed by RK Nayyar

After 'Love in Simla', he paired with Asha Parekh.

The Asha Parekh - Joy Mukherjee pairing gave a number of hits like - 'Phir Wohi Dil Laya Hoon', 'Love in Tokyo' and 'Ziddi'.

Joy Mukherjee produced and directed 'Humsaaya'.

Despite a late success with home production 'Ek Baar Muskura Do' (1972) with brother Deb Mukherjee and later to be sister-in-law Tanuja, Joy faded from the silver screen.

His last success came with him directing 'Chailla Babu', a film starring Zeenat Aman and Rajesh Khanna.

In 2009 he acted in the television serial 'Aye Dil-e-Nadan'.

Joy Mukherjee died at the age of 73 in Mumbai.

Mukherjee was admitted to the hospital on March 5.

He had high fever and was unconscious. His overall condition was critical.

"He passed away today morning at 9.30 am. He died due to prolonged illness and old age. His lungs were not functioning and he could not breathe, hence he was on ventilator. His condition was critical since last three days," Joy Mukherhee's spokesperson told PTI.

The actor was in Leelavati Hospital.

Joy Mukherjee's film family included his brothers Deb Mukherjee and Shomu Mukherjee. Shomu is married to actress Tanuja & their daughters are actresses Kajol and Tanisha.

Incidently, his father was skeptical about Mukherjee's movie career. He agreed only after Agha jani Kashmeri convinced him.

After his career dried up with the emergence of stars like Dharmendra, Jeetendra and Rajesh Khanna, Mukherjee ventured into direction with films like 'Love in Bombay' (1974), 'Chhaila Babu' (1977), 'Saanjh Ki Bela' (1981) and 'Umeed' (1989).

The actor is survived by wife Neelam and they have three children - two sons and a daughter.

He became a heartthrob thanks to his matinee idol good looks. He wore Western clothes like a fashion model and won a huge number of female fans, who remember him for his boyish looks and physique. (IANS)

Some of Bollywood's best love songs, such as 'Woh hain zara khafa khafa' ('Shagrid'), 'O Mere Shahe Khuba' ('Love In Tokyo') and 'Hamko tumhaare ishq ne' ('Ek Musafir Ek Hasina'), were picturised on Joy. (IANS)

Often criticised as a bit wooden and one dimensional as a performer, he showed great comic timing.

As his debut 'Love in Simla' catapulted him to stardom, it later came to fore that he wasn't even the first choice for the role. Many newcomers, including Dharmendra, were considered for the project. But director RK Nayyar noticed Joy and convinced him to sign for the film. Joy was barely 21 then.

He produced and directed 'Humsaaya' (1968), where he gave himself a double role. Film historians remember the movie as it included risky stunts and a series of blasts that blew up trucks, but what people remember the most is the cat fight between Mala Sinha and Sharmila Tagore on the sets, which gave the film unexpected publicity.

Ironically, films with big heroines, 'Love in Bombay' (1974) with Waheeda, which he also directed, 'Saanjh Ki Bela' with Nutan (1981) and 'Umeed' with Nanda (1989) trickled in, but Joy had then passed the prime of his life and so had his leading ladies.

Hits and misses aside - Joy Mukherjee left a lasting impression with his roles. He will be sorely missed. RIP Joy Mukherjee.
