Mumbai: The real life story of Gudia — a woman who, with her unborn child, had to chose between two husbands — is now a full fledged feature film. Kahani Gudiya Ki starring Divya Dutta and Rajpal Yadav ran into controversy for questioning the Shariat, but is now ready for release.
Gudiya was married for just 10 days when her husband went missing in the Kargil war. After waiting for him for two years, Gudiya was married off to another man.
However, four years later, Gudiya's first husband returned to claim his now pregnant wife. She had to return to her first husband on grounds of the Shariat or Islamic law.
In 2005, Gudiya had said, "Na humein koi etraaz na hai, na bannane se, na bannne se. ("I don't mind if a film is made on my life.")
Gudiya died in 2006, but her story lives on.
With Divya Dutta as Gudiya and Arif Zakariya and Rajpal Yadav in the film, Kahani Gudiya Ki is all set to hit theatres on April 18. However, the making of the film hasn't been a smooth ride.
Gudiya's first husband is now threatening to take legal action against the film.
The director of the film, Prabhakar Shukla says, "I have been receiveing various threatening calls from extremist Muslim groups, but I am going to release the film at any cost."
Though there is uncertainty about the kind of response the film would receive, everyone including the lead lady is keeping their fingers crossed.
"The audience is very smart, so I am not going to ask anyone to come and watch the film, but we have given it our best and let's see what happens," says Divya Dutta.
Here's wishing the team and the film all the luck.
