Bomb attack on Dera chief in Karnal

CNN-IBN

New Delhi: The chief of Dera Sacha Sauda, Baba Gurmeet Singh Ram Rahim, came under a bomb attack on Saturday when a tyre stuffed with explosives was hurled before his cavalcade triggering a blast, which injured 11 people.

Baba Gurmeet Singh Ram Rahim, however, escaped unhurt. The Baba has Z-plus category security cover. The attack took place when he was returning to Sirsa from Ambala after a court hearing. The police confirmed that it was a bomb blast and was thrown from a truck as the convoy was passing by.

The incident occurred near Nilokheri in Karnal district. Additional Director General of Police, VB Singh, in Chandigarh said one car burst into flames after the bomb was hurled at it.

Some Dera supporters later blocked the highway in protest, but the police removed them in a short while. Sources say the Dera could use the attack as an excuse to move the case against Baba to Haryana.

Baba Gurmeet Singh Ram Rahim is facing charges in connection with his alleged involvement in the murder of a local journalist.

Haryana Police have rounded up two persons, including the driver of the truck, in connection with the attack. Forensic experts from Haryana have reached the attack site and collected evidence.

The Dera chief had sparked a huge uproar by the Sikhs a few months back after he allegedly tried to imitate the dress and activities of Guru Gobind Singh.

Baba Gurmeet Singh Ram Rahim later apologised for the same, saying he never intended to imitate Guru Gobind Singh or cause anguish to his brethren in the Sikh community.
