Book to reveal Leela Naidu's life

CNN-IBN

Mumbai: She wowed the world with her grace and beauty before slipping into a reclusive life, now actress Leela Naidu’s life is being revealed in a book.

Writer Jerry Pinto talking about his latest subject, says that the legendary actress was named among the world's 30 most beautiful women, has graced the cover of Time magazine and was trained under French director Jean Renoir. And Leela also modeled for Vichitra Sarees at the age of 50.

Leela acted in just 10 films, and yet left an unforgettable career behind. Her role of an adulterous wife in the 1963 Yeh Raaste Hain Pyar Ke earned her criticism. But Merchant Ivory films also gave her an international identity in the 60s.

Leela had an equally dramatic personal life, with her first marriage to hospitality baron Tikki Oberoi and then her second, tumultuous marriage to poet Dom Moreas.

So with a life as eventful as that, Leela wanted her biography to be more interesting than lengthy.

"It was tough for me to decide which parts and which details to pick and choose, as some things were very sensitive. And she didn't want the book to be a tedious 700 page load,” says Pinto.

Leela’s elusive life will be out on paper towards the end of this year.
