Boucher, Pranab see eye to eye on terror

New Delhi: The focus in Delhi is clearly on pressing ahead with investigations into the Mumbai attacks. US assistant Secretary of State Richard Boucher met with Indian officials after meetings in Islamabad earlier this week to offer more US support.

"We see this as promising but there is a long way to go in eliminating terrorism from Pakistani soil," said Richard Boucher.

US and India, both have welcomed Pakistan's admission that the lone captured terrorist from the Mumbai terror attacks, Ajmal Amir Kasab's a Pakistani. Both the countries also reiterate that the admission is not enough and there is a lot more that Pakistan must do quickly.

"That's a continuing and on-going process dealing with people responsible for organising this act and following the leads to make sure that we know everyone who was involved and closing down the organisations that helped in carrying out these attacks," Boucher added.

The US administration has made it clear that it wants to see the investigations being carried out in partnership by India and Pakistan. It may be no co-incidence that the US Assistant Secretary of State Richard Boucher was in Islamabad the day India handed over the terror dossier, and that he is in Delhi after Pakistan's confirmation of Kasab's nationality

India vowed to keep the pressure on. External Affairs Minister Pranab Mukherjee told newsmen, "It gives them ample opportunity to carry on further investigations at their end because conspiracy took place in the territory and jurisdiction of Pakistan."

The FBI team that has been in Mumbai is now slated to leave for Pakistan to try and fit some pieces of the gruesome puzzle of the Mumbai attacks with what they have learned so far.

The Indian and American diplomatic tango continues. Washington may not agree with New Delhi that ISI had a hand in the 26/11 attacks but as far as putting Lashkar and other terrorist groups out of business is concerned, both are on the same page.
