Parents defy order, boy's eye removed

Patna: A 10-year-old boy's eye was gouged out in a Bihar village as a punishment for his parents' refusal to vote for a particular candidate in the panchayat elections.

The victim, Ajit Kumar of Dhabouli village in Begusarai district, is now undergoing treatment at a government hospital.

According to sources, his eye was gouged out with a pointed grass-cutting tool on Monday while he was playing in the fields.

His father Suresh Rai, a landless labourer, alleged that four people of his village - Jeeran Rai, Shambhoo, Sheoji and his wife - overpowered and gouged his son's eye to punish them for not voting for their candidate in the panchayat elections held in June.

"I accuse myself for having refused to vote for their candidate because it cost me my son's eye," said Jago Devi, his mother.

She said that the persons responsible had threatened to teach them a lesson after the panchayat elections were over.

However, no police complaint has been lodged despite the parents repeated attempts.
