Mumbai: Debutant Indian filmmaker Rahi Anil Bharve's short film Manjha has been chosen by director Danny Boyle as part of the Slumdog Millionaire DVD.
Anurag Kashyap, Filmmaker : "Danny has this thing, if you pick any of his DVDs they always have a short film by an upcoming filmmaker. And since Slumdog is set in Mumbai, he wanted to put a short film by an Indian filmmaker. So I sent him Manjha because I liked it very much. And I sent him few more films that I liked," said filmamker Anurag Kashyap.
Danny Boyle was so impressed with this short film that he decided to make it a part of the DVD of Slumdog Millionaire. Manjha is 28-year-old filmmaker Rahi Anil Barve's debut film.
This film has done its festival rounds and now since it's part of the high profile film Slumdog Millionaire it will automatically reach out to a vast audience now.
However, initially there were no takers to fund this film. Rahi managed to get some money from his uncle and made it at just Rs 60,000 by shooting in real locations in just seven days flat.
"We used to shoot in slums, which I can't name now, we used to shoot with bike lights and all at 2:30-3 in the night, with five members and two actors," explained Rahi.
The story revolves around two slum kids Ranka and Chimi and their first hand experience with violence followed by revenge. A school drop out, Rahi has had no formal training in filmmaking which clearly doesn't show when you watch his first film.
"Surprisingly, it was very easy. From the first day of the shoot, I didn't know that I had to yell something call action but I had seen the film industry fort past six years. I did nothing but watched films. Every kind of world cinema and it helped," said Rahi.
That's not it, impressed with his short film, filmmaker Anurag Kashyap is now producing his feature film Tumbad, a period horror drama with mythological elements.
