Pune: A 22-year-old call centre employee was allegedly gangraped in Pune on Thursday. The incident came to light when an FIR was lodged by her 25-year-old friend on Friday night.
According to the FIR, the victim received a call from her office at 11.30 pm on Thursday. She apparently had to report to office for an urgent work. She was picked up by the office cab and while on her way a few other cabs followed them.
The FIR says she was allegedly gangraped by eight to 10 people, suspected to be cab drivers, in an area which is 16 kilometers away from her house.
However, the BPO has denied having sent any vehicle to pick her up on Thursday.
The girl is admitted in a government hospital and is in an unconscious state. The police is awaiting her medical report and has said that they are yet to record her statement.
Meanwhile, IBM Corp General Manager Roma Sachdev told CNN-IBN, “It is an unfortunate incident and we are co-operating with police authorities in the investigation. As the investigation is on I cannot comment on whether the cab was sent or not.”
This is the second such case involving a call centre employee in the city. IT professional Jyoti Kumari Chaudhary was raped and killed at Talegaon Dabhade in November 2007.
The incident once again brings into sharp focus the safety of women working in call centres.
