Sao Paulo: At least 90 people were killed in a nightclub in southern Brazil on Sunday after a band's pyrotechnics show caused the establishment to catch fire, local officials said.
Emergency officials were still counting the dead, and at least 50 people were injured, Guido Melo, commander of the fire brigade in Rio Grande do Sul state, told Reuters.
The incident occurred in the city of Santa Maria 187 miles (300 km) west of the state capital of Porto Alegre.

Estado de S Paulo newspaper reported on its website that as many as 2,000 people were in the nightclub when the fire broke out.
