Zurich: Football titans Brazil has been named the host of the 2014 World Cup. The five-time world champion was the only nation bidding to host the tournament.

FIFA President Sepp Blatter said, "The executive committee has decided, unanimously, to give not only the right, but the responsibility to organise FIFA's World Cup 2014 to the country, Brazil."

This announcement culminated a wait of more than six decades for Brazil to stage the Beautiful Game's greatest spectacle.

Brazil hosted the World Cup for the first and only time in 1950. Although it was a foregone conclusion that they would win the bid, relief sank in only after the official announcement at the FIFA headquarters.

The President of Brazil Football Federation, Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva, said "Let's not choose who is going to play the finals with Brazil. Certainly we will work, yes Dunga, so that Brazil can reach the finals."

Brazil has already set aside about 600 million pounds to upgrade their stadiums, including the Maracana in Rio de Janiero that had hosted the 1950 final.

The tournament is being hosted by a South American nation after a gap of 36 years.
