90,000 Indian women develop breast cancer every year according to the Indian Council of Medical Research.
Simmi Malhotra was diagnosed with cancer some time ago. She shares, "initially I was devastated and took ten minutes to retain normalcy. But then I thought I had to live. "Cancer survivor Simmi Malhotra feels a positive outlook is half the battle won.
Simmi says she found her ten-year-old son as a source of immense strength. She says, "I want to live for my son. He's my world. And he's too young to be left alone. I want to see him grow. And also my grandchildren."
Breast cancer is one of the fastest growing cancers amongst women in India. And there's no way of predicting who will be affected, so early detection is crucial. Doctors recommend regular breast self examination once a month after the age of 20 and if you notice a lump, bring it to the attention of your gynaecologist.
Simmi says that she never thought that it would happen to her. "Why of all d people it had to be me? But it's not the end. It's the beginning of another innings."
