New Delhi: The Election Commission on Monday postponed to Wednesday the hearing in the controversial ‘communal’ CD issue that has put BJP on the mat.
Earlier, sources told CNN-IBN that BJP will ask the Election Commissioner Navin Chawla not to attend the hearing as there is a Supreme Court notice pending against him.
The petition was filed by BJP earlier and the party now believes Chawla will not be a neutral official in this case.
However, the Opposition is also mounting its offensive. On Monday morning, Congress leader Kapil Sibal along with representatives of Bahujan Samaj Party, Samajwadi Party and Jan Morcha reached EC to argue that the CDs were unconstitutional and that BJP should be derecognised.
From the BJP end, senior leaders including Ravi Shankar Prasad, Mukhtar Abbas Naqvi and Arun Jaitley will plead ignorance for the party in front of the EC.
The EC had lodged FIRs against BJP president Rajnath Singh among other leaders and also against CNN-IBN’s sister network IBN7 for broadcasting contents of the CD.
Caught on the backfoot, the BJP is now crying foul with Rajnath Singh declaring that he will court arrest in Lucknow on Monday.
The party continues to maintain that the CD was released unintentionally.
Senior leader Venkaiah Naidu has said the party will conduct an internal enquiry into the issue. He has also said this is a conspiracy against the BJP.
