Panaji: The Goa Police has secured a 14-day custody for a man named Samson for the alleged murder of Britain national, Scarlette in Panaji.
The police now hope to reconstruct the chain of events which led to Scarlette's body being found at the Anjuna beach on February 18.
But even as the police finally concede Scarlette may indeed have been murdered, the victim's family has now written a letter to Chief Minister, Digamber Kamat asking the case be transferred to the CBI.
The family's advocate, Vikram Verma says, "We have written a letter to the Chief Minister to hand over this case to CBI and carry out an inquiry into the conduct of the guilty officers."
The family seems to have many reasons for losing faith in the police. Several questions over the way the investigation was conducted still remain unanswered. For instance:
- Why did the police take weeks to admit that the 15-year-old teenager had been murdered?
- Why is the police underplaying the rape angle?
- Why did the first autopsy report differ substantively from the second? The first showed five bruises on Scarlette's body while the second showed 50.
- Did the police and the Goa Medical College doctors try and hush up the case?
- Why was Scarlette on the beach till five o clock in the morning and who was she with?
- And finally, what was the motive for the murder?
The case has now divided the Digamber Kamat government as well. Tourism Minister Mickey Pacheco summoned senior police officers on Monday and even went to the extent of asking for the dismissal of erring officers, something he officially isn't supposed to do.
"I had a meeting with Inspector General of Police. I have instructed him to increase vigil on busy beach areas. Drugs are rampant at such busy points. I have asked him to keep check on such illegalities. I have also asked them to take action against guilty officers," said Pacheco.
Meanwhile, Goa Inspector General Police, Kishen Kumar has said, "As far as handing over the case to Goa Police is concerned we will accept whatever decision the government takes. It's up to them."
The police so far have officially questioned three people. Sources say at least four more are likely to be questioned soon on the basis of Samson's interrogation.
