British 'teddy teacher' pardoned by Sudan Prez

New Delhi: A British school teacher jailed in Sudan for insulting Islam will soon be released.

Sudan's President Omar al-Bashir pardoned Gillina Gibbons after a meeting with two British Muslim MPs.

Fifty-year-old Gibbons had served eight days of her 15-day jail term for letting her class name a teddy bear Muhammad.

The two MPs met Gibbons in Sunday, they later read out a statement from the teacher saying she had the highest respect for Islam and had not knowingly offended any one. British Prime Minister Gordon Brown said he was "delighted and relieved" at the news.

In a statement, Gibbons said "I am sorry if I caused any distress.” Gibbons is expected to be released later on Monday and flown back to the UK.
