New York: The new Albert Brooks film, Looking for Comedy in the Muslim World, opens in North America this Friday. The film is called Looking for Comedy in the Muslim World, but a large part of it is set in India.
Albert Brooks, who wrote, directed and acted in the film, says that's because India has the world's second-largest Muslim population. But on watching the film, you might think the film isn't so much about comedy and Muslims, as it is about India.
"95 per cent of any American movies that are shot here are shooting the passage to India or jungle book or about historical angle. I'm trying to capture what India is like in 2004 and 2005," says Brooks.
The movie also marks a turning point for Indian-American actress Sheetal Sheth, who has starred in desi films like American Chai and ABCD. But here, she gets to share the headline with Albert Brooks.
The actress, who is exited about filming in India, says, "It was great to be in a country that I love and am so connected to. It gives me a chance to bridge work, family and culture all in one. I couldn't have asked for a better experience."
The sub-text for this film is the tension between India and Pakistan, and how the presence of an American comedian, who is sent by the US Administration on an innocent mission to the region, can aggravate that.
So, here's a comedy that starts out with Albert Brooks looking for what makes Muslims laugh and instead almost sets off a war between India and Pakistan.
The dates for an Indian release have not been announced yet, so you'll have to wait.
