New Delhi: Labour Party leader Gordon Brown, who takes over from Tony Blair as Prime Minister of Britain on Wednesday, has hinted that he would make major changes in foreign policy.
“Future foreign policy will reflect the truth that to isolate and defeat terrorist extremism now involves more than military force,” said Brown in his first address after taking over as head of the Labour Party.
Gordon indicated his preference for multilateral approaches, a clear distancing from Blair's approach. But he also said there would be no immediate withdrawal of British troops from Iraq.
In domestic policy, Brown is expected to focus on health and continue Blair's public service reform measures. "This week marks a new start, a chance to renew and I say to the people of this country, the government I lead belongs to you. I will work hard for you I shall try my utmost, I am ready—ready to serve," said Brown.
Brown has a new deputy party leader: Justice Minister Harriet Harman. A woman of Gujarati origin, Shriti Vadera, will be Brown’s special advisor and is set to hold one of the most influential posts in the Cabinet.
