BRT chokes traffic on second day of trial run

New Delhi: Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) corridor, the latest experiment in urban traffic management, was a flop on its second day of its trial run too. Commuters on the Ambedkar Nagar - Moolchand stretch of the corridor were stuck in traffic jam because of the trial run.

The BRT corridor connects Ambedkar Nagar to Delhi Gate. Concrete barriers have been constructed through out the 5.6-km stretch to separate buses from other vehicles.

Bus lanes have been created in the center of the road but lack of enough road space for other vehicles leads to chaos.

Traffic volume on the corridor during peak hours is estimated to touch a massive 20,000-30,000 vehicles per hour, and with only a single lane on either side left to tackle such huge load, traffic jams are more a rule than an exception.

Waiting time has gone up to 30-45 minutes and even drivers driving into the BRT corridor are confused not knowing which lane to drive into as not enough or prominently displayed signage are in place.

Bus drivers trying to enter their lane from outside the corridor are also holding up traffic because of the criss-cross, and if any vehicle breaks down, it’s bound to create a huge pile up as each of these lanes are only wide enough to allow the vehicles to move in a single file.

The government however, dismisses these as mere teething troubles.

“The problems we have faced yesterday or today will help us in rectifying those bottlenecks,” Delhi Transport Minister Haroon Yusuf said.

The government insists the experiment will work, but commuters are dreading May 1 when the trial runs end and the corridor becomes fully operational.
