B-schools focusing on specialisation

Mumbai: In an increasingly competitive world, it may not be enough to just have an MBA. And realising this, B-schools are rolling out specialised courses with a sharp focus on sectors.

An MBA student of Narsee Monji Institute of Management Studies (NMIMS), 24-year-old Jyoti Kumar Verma has given his final MBA exams.

Verma, who is specialising in capital markets, will soon become an investment banker in the company he desired to work in.

Along with capital markets, NMIMS also offers specialisations like Services Management, Pharmaceuticals Management, Actuarial Science, Technology and Retail Management.

Jyoti Kumar Verma, Student, NMIMS gives us all inputs from financial background and technology background and prepares for all rigors of outside world.

Many other colleges have now started offering such sectoral courses. Welingkars and SP Jain Institute in Mumbai both have MBA programs with specialisation in retail and e-business and investment banking respectively.

All these B-schools have tie-ups with many companies who come down to their campus every year and employ their students.

For instance, NMIMS has a tie up with Pantaloons for their retail students and the BSE for the capital market course.

“Two reasons why students opt for this are employability and students can choose their own paths,” said NMIMS Vice Chancellor NM Kondap.

With more and more B-schools aligning themselves with the industry requirements, the students now have an opportunity to look at a specialisation right from day one of their management career.
