BSNL to set up 200 video-conferencing centres next year in India

New Delhi: State-run BSNL plans to set up video-conferencing centres at 200 locations in the next year with a view to generating additional revenues by utilising its excess capacity.

"We are looking at setting up public video-conferencing centres at 200 locations in the country based on revenue share model. As per our plan, it should be done by the first half of 2013," BSNL Chairman and Managing Director R K Upadhyay told PTI.

The video-conferencing centres will be open for every body for various kind of activities such as meetings, training sessions etc, he said.

The BSNL CMD said that the company is looking to utilise its capacity and assets to generate additional revenue.

"We will call for expression of interest in a week for this project. BSNL will provide space and its telecom resources for setting up this VC centres to the selected vendor," he said.

BSNL registered a loss of about Rs 8,850.70 crore in 2011-12 mainly due to regulatory expenses and non-receipt of funds for its rural landline operations.

Total revenue of the company for 2011-12 declined to Rs 27,933.5 crore during the year, compared to Rs 29,687.62 crore in the previous year.

Upadhyay said that BSNL is looking at new business models to increase its revenue with minimal or no investments by utilising its excess capacity.

The BSNL CMD said that on the same model company is also looking to set up wi-fi hotspots in the country where it will provide space in its offices and telecom resources.
